In This Moment – Blood [3.5]

The music is entirely mysterious electric and synth-ish. The beginning sounds like the welcoming into a magician show, into an atmosphere of expectations. The music in Blood is characterized by many echos which finish the phrases making the music very technical. The guitar solos are progressive containing bright direct melodies. The rhythm changes within the same tracks, from tough to more sensitive making the sound very dynamic. The songs start often slowly and melodic, growing through the beats and then exploding in desperate and powerful screams. Maria Brink’s voice is strong with a soft grunge attitude, she whispers deeply into the microphone while singing, reminds me often of a sharper Gwen Stefani. She continues the shifting through the various tracks from a talkative breathing to a clear louder voice which, in most of the melodic verses, is very sensual. I would prefer Brink’s way of singing to stay more clear and profound. Some of the tracks can be quite repetitive from a screaming point of view but she manages to revive the feelings from the songs. You can surely feel the aggression, anger and desperation through her powerful and theatrical voice. She spits out the words as she is talking with someone right straight in front of her. Like she is arguing instead of singing. This makes the album seem more personal and intimate. Although, I may say, that sometimes the vocals are quite too loud in comparison to the other instruments. In This Moment succeeds with this album to bring the listener closer into a hypothetical mind where industrial and mechanical music make you a part of a darker place. Especially in the shorter tracks where it’s like Brink whispers directly out those illusionary, mysterious thoughts. This band tries new horizons making a balance through pop melodies and metalcore.

I knew that I wanted this album to bring out elements we’ve never shown before. This alluring, darker, sinful side of us that no one has ever seen,” says Maria Brink (vocals) We wanted to find something new within ourselves, and with this album, I’m definitely the boldest I’ve ever been. I’m not trying to push boundaries. It’s not a conscious thing. It’s a natural artistic place.”
